Performing a series of tasks, with a nod to the Labors of Hercules—and to the myth of grad school as an “experience of virtuous struggle and suffering”—as a way to set off on an path of exploring, responding and collecting. For myself, completing the twelve labors offered the chance to play multiple parts—as archeologist, cartographer, soothsayer. These role playing exercises allowed me to cross over into alternate modes of seeing, opening up new connections and arriving at crossroads I may otherwise have overlooked.
